Finding Gas Stations On Trips
You may think that gas stations are everywhere you look, but if you are suddenly running low or need directions, you may find there is not one in sight.
It always happens to me, and you would think after a while I would learn to get gas before the needle hits the “E”. It just seems that I glance at the gauge and see that I have half of a tank and then before I know it, it’s lower than I want it to be. By that point I have passed fifteen gas stations and suddenly there aren't any in sight.
Different Gas Station Types
There are many different types of gas stations too, and there are some that I just don’t want to visit. This is often in the middle of the night when I decide I don’t want to stop somewhere, and it is usually because it looks a little less than secure.
Open Times
Some gas stations have twenty-four hour service, though perhaps some of them should not. I know people need gas in the middle of the night, but in some neighborhoods, unless you see full service, you may not want to stop.
The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Gas Stations
Perhaps the thing I hate to worst about some gas stations are the dirty bathrooms.
If you walk into a station and ask to use the restroom, and they hand you a key to go around the back of the building, you may want to think twice.
This scenario has never worked out well for me, and I can’t imagine it would for anyone else.
These gas stations are often understaffed, and the bathroom is the last thing on their priority list. I have walked into some of them and walked right back out and moved on. It’s just not worth it!
Sometimes, you have no choice, and in that case, I recommend standing, no matter if you are a man or a woman.
Fuel Prices At Different Service Stations
The bathroom situation pales in comparison with the price of gasoline these days. I don't care for the dirty facilities at some gas stations but I really don't care for the high gasoline prices (and sometimes sold out) situations. I know some of these perilous times are not controlled by the oil companies but some are.
Unfortunately, I can't control the price of gasoline, but there are some things I can do to pay a cheaper price per gallon.
Highest Gas Prices by State
Finding the best gas prices has become a game for me. I use things like dollar averaging to try to pay the least I can for this yellow gold. Also, when traveling, I look for the cheapest rates, write them down, and stop at those exits when returning home.
I also hop online to find the 10 states that grapple with the highest gas prices simply by popping opening a Google search engine and keep check on fuel costs at some of the information sites like www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/gasprices .
As prices rise, it is getting more and more difficult to find gas stations with decent prices but, if we stick together, do all we can to save fuel, we can bring price per gallon down a penny or two. I'd rather keep some of my money, wouldn't you?
Now, after taking that tangent, back to the service station issue ..
Unique Gas Stations
Some gas stations are unique, but not perhaps in build. If you go to New Jersey, you will find that you can’t pump your own gas.
I have a friend who lives there, and she recently was faced with pumping her own gas. She needed instructions from me, even though she’s over thirty. The state, for some reason, won’t allow self-service gas stations. Can you believe that??
If you live there, that might be one of the coolest things about the state. Imagine never having to get gasoline on your new business suit or having to get out of your car in the rain to pay for your gas.
Yes, the gas station might not be around forever but somebody will be pumping something -- at least for the near future. Just something we have to live with in these days of oil.
